Barry Smith is executive vice president and chief operating officer (COO) of the Global Client Coverage Group for State Street Global Advisors. He is also a member the firm’s Executive Management Group.

In his COO role, Barry is responsible for leading the strategic direction and growth of our institutional business, driving globally consistent approaches to how we sell to and service institutional clients. In addition to developing the Global Client Coverage Group’s sales and service operating platform and infrastructure, Barry leads the State Street Global Advisors’ Global Defined Contribution and Global Cash businesses. He also serves as President of SSGA Trust Company and SSGA Canada, Ltd..

Previously, Barry was Head of Americas for the Global Client Coverage Group, overseeing sales and relationship management in the United States, Canada and Latin America.

Barry has more than twenty-five years of experience in financial services with a focus on institutional sales and distribution. Prior to joining State Street Global Advisors in 2010, Barry was with BlackRock, where he served as managing director and head of the Private Label Cash Management business. Barry joined BlackRock through  its’ acquisition of Merrill Lynch Investment Managers, where he served as head of institutional cash management and in various sales and marketing management roles.

Barry earned a bachelor of arts degree in financial economics from Saint Anselm College, where he has also served as a member and Treasurer of the Board of Trustees.
